Peaches and Cream

I just love this rubber stamp – in fact I love the whole range of fruity/kitchen/recipe stamps we have. This particular stamp is from a sheet called Spiced Peaches and has a lovely recipe included as well.

The design idea behind this card is such an easy one for you to have a go with – just using a die cut shape – stamp the image and colour (go Promarkers!) and then soften the edges with some of the Old Paper or other soft beige Distress Ink pads.

While we are talking Distress Ink pads – many of you will have tried to use them with the Inkessentials Blending Tool – which is a good piece of kit, but I have to say I have found the Inkylicious Duster brushes so much easier. The brushes come in a set of three and they have made me a lot keener to use the Distress Inks around the edge of my cards and I agree this can add a lovely texture and effect. Now I feel happy that I can achieve it with no blips I am doing it so much more often!

Soft, pretty cards are always well received, as I am sure this one would be… of course if you were feeling really generous you could make a jar of spiced peaches as a gift to go with the car… or not!

Velvet and Lace

My favourite cards always involve something feminine and this example is definitely a favourite! I love the effect you can achieve with the lace stamps (there are several to choose from on the web site) and the mixture of parchment, velvet, lace and flowers is wonderful. Those hydrangeas from my garden look pretty too don’t they – thank you photographer!

The way to get one of the best effects from the lace stamps is to choose a “detail white” embossing powder, stamp with a Versamark pad and then sprinkle with the embossing powder – tap to clear any excess and then heat emboss. This is an easy task once you have the hang of it – using parchment I always heat from the back so I can see the changes taking place and move the heat along to prevent burning/overheating etc.

So I will go back to admiring my hydrangeas out of the window and see what we can come up with for next week’s blog!

Summer drinks parties…

July is here and let’s hope it finally means the start of summer! Warm summer evenings are perfect for drinks parties when the emphasis is more on conversation than food. Here are two lovely fruity drinks that are bound to get the conversation flowing!

Strawberry Summer Cup

This summer cup is really lovely but, beware when sampling it – I’ve known people to drink very large quantities of this because it is so delicious!

You will need:

  • 300 ml (1/2 pint) Grand Marnier liqueur
  • 300 ml (1/2 pint) Kirsch liqueur
  • 4-5 litres (7-8 pints) medium-dry white wine
  • 2kg (41/2lb) ripe strawberries
  • 6 oranges

Slice the oranges and strawberries, then place in a large bowl and pour over the Grand Marnier and the Kirsch liqueurs. If possible, place in a refrigerator and leave to soak for one hour, but not much longer or the fruit will be past its best. Then pour over the wine and stir the mixture well.

Spiced Fruit Cooler

This recipe is a very good reason for giving alcohol a miss – it’s much nicer than some wines I’ve drunk in the past! It’s also so delicious the poor old car drivers in the party won’t feel they are missing out either.

You will need:

  • 1.8 litres (3 pints) sparkling mineral water
  • 1.8 litres (3 pints) fresh orange juice
  • 900ml (1 1/2 pints) fresh grapefruit juice
  • 900ml (11/2 pints) fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 10 cloves
  • 175g (6oz) sugar
  • 450ml (3/4 pint) water
  • 275g (10oz) runny honey
  • 1 orange for decoration
  • 1 lemon for decoration
  • ice cubes for decoration

Thoroughly chill all the fruit juices and the mineral water. Mix the 450ml (3/4 pint) of water, cinnamon sticks, cloves and sugar in a pan and bring to the boil. Stir gently until all the sugar has dissolved. Simmer for about 5 minutes, then add the honey, stirring until it has dissolved. Remove from the heat and leave to cool.

Once the mixture has cooled, strain it into a large punch bowl (preferably the most attractive one you can find), and add the fresh juices and the sparkling mineral water. Stir gently. Decorate with slices of orange and lemon and ice cubes.

Willow Sunset

Stamping has had a real surge of interest over the past couple of years – and quite rightly so. It is a craft that is relatively inexpensive once you have a collection of rubber stamps.

Unmounted stamps are a great way to go for so many reasons, saves space, saves money all that good stuff! You can choose to use EZ Mount (my choice) or Rock-a-blocks, glues and various other ways of attaching the stamps to clear acrylic blocks.

This card has a pretty background created with the Inkylicious brushes or the Inkssentials Ink Blending Tool and the Tim Holtz distress ink pads. Just build the layers of colour – taking care to overlap and gently keep adding depth of hue. You can make every card completely unique to you as you choose the colour, the depth of hue and the ‘look’ of the background. Then stamp the willow tree – in this case from my countryside stamps “Garden of Dreams”.

The artist Michelle Radford actually sat and drew the tree looking at the willow in our garden that was a collective present from all the staff at JS Limited when Richard and I got married (ahhhh!).

There are so many fun techniques you can do with a silhouette style stamp such as this – it works really well if you stamp and emboss – for example a white embossed or silver embossed tree on a black background. Another look I like is using a sepia coloured ink pad on a cream background – the options are endless – have fun!

A basket of flowers…

I thought it was about time I had a look at a card design – and I’ve chosen a really lovely one for you! The artist behind this series of 3D-decoupage is T.C.Chui and I just love all the flowery interior scenes we have chosen in this pack – such pretty pictures. The sheets are available from my website.

A basket of flowers on a card can be just the thing for so many different occasions and gives you the chance to add some pretty paper or silk flowers as embellishments.

The decoupage is made up using silicone glue or Pinflair glue gel – or alternatively you can use little foam pads. Then mat and layer on some pretty pink card and place on a seven or eight inch square base card with a fairly neutral backing paper. The fun can then begin with floral or die cut embellishments and ribbons!

With Valentine’s, Mother’s day and Easter looming, you can have great fun creating something really lovely and personal for those special people in your life.
